Are we artsier, more neighborly, safer, more affirming, less sprawling, hipper, wealthier, smarter, greener, more representative, healthier, outdoorsier, and less car-centric? Columbia Vision, which was started in 2006, has filed its first report. How do we evaluate the vision? Jan Weaver, from the Columbia Vision Commission and UU member, will give a progress report.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A “FREE CHURCH

A FREE LUNCH AND THE “FREE CHURCH!” New class scheduled Saturday, April 10, 2010

This church is part of a rich tradition. It is worthy to discover that treasure, to find how our church life fits into a larger historical context.

A workshop session, “Discover UU” will be facilitated by Rev. Haney. This one-day session will cover the history of our Unitarian and Universalist traditions and the development of the theologies that formed the Free Church concept. We will gather at 8:30 AM with coffee, tea and bagels, with the session beginning at 9, and ending at 3 PM. Lunch will be provided, and childcare will also be available, each at no cost. New UU Bible Study

“The Sermon on the Mount and the Sermon on the Plain” are the topic for the four part series, with Rev. Bill Haney and Stephen Blower teaching.
Meeting times. are 5:15-6:30 pm Thursdays–  March 11, March 25, April 8, April 22
Open to all.

The ext is the NEW REVISED STANDARD VERSION BIBLE.
Preparation includes reading quite carefully Matthew chapters 5-7 and Luke 6:17-49  while keeping in mind:

How does what each author selects to put in the mouth of Jesus reflect his own concerns re: his Church? Are either of these sermons to be taken seriously? Can they be? Why is Luke’s so much shorter, and do you think these are originally the same Sermon source material in the hands of two different authors, or are they really completely different?

If you haven’t participated in a Bible study UU style, you are in for a stimulating, pleasant, mind altering experience!

For more information, call the church office (442-5764).

Spring Family Forums

Co-sponsored by the Peace Building Team and Religious Education

Healthy Families/Healthy Congregation”

This series of forums is planned for second Sundays each month to be held after worship services, in a brown-bag seminar format.

The focus would be based on the criteria of a healthy congregation as outlined by Dori Thexton in the September 11, 2009 workshop. Basically a healthy congregation is a community where people are safe in all ways – personally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and interpersonally

Sunday, March 14, noon – 2:00 P.M. – Sanctuary

Healthy Family Dynamics”

A seminar on “Healthy Family Dynamics” will be facilitated by psychologists Wayne and Carla Anderson. They will first discuss recent developments in improving marital relationships focusing on the work of John Gottman.  During a practice session participants will work on three skills to improve family dynamics: (1) active listening–making sure you are really understanding what the other person is saying, (2) building a positive environment–being aware of the ratio of positive to negative messages you are sending verbally and non-verbally, (3) controlling negative responses through self talk–”I will take some deep breaths, control my anger, and work this problem through slowly because in the long run that will get better results for all of us.”

Bring a brown bag lunch. Childcare provided.

Standing on the Side of Love

February has been designated by our Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations as a time to support the needs of our gay and lesbian friends, there are a few things that can be done for support and help.

1.  The Center Project is constantly in need of funding, both on a day-to-day fundraising level, but also on a larger corporate or long-term sponsorship level, too.
2.  The Center Project needs volunteers, programming, and leadership.
3.  Organizers for the local PrideFest gathering in June have several needs, long-term and day-of-event.
4.  PRISM, the LGBT & ally teen group, needs adult Board members and advisors.

If you can help in any way, contact The Center Project at info@thecenterproject.org, or 573.449.1188. The Center Project is located at 901 East Ash Street, Columbia, MO 65201.
